What are Henna Brows?

I know what you’re thinking…who the heck can pull off red brows? That’s what I thought when I first heard about brow henna. Well, take it from this esthetician that should have been born a red head (I have to pay for it), I know a thing or two about henna.

I was probably 8 or 9 when I first remember watching my mom painstakingly apply the henna to her hair. When you have red heads on both sides the family it seems really unfair that the gene skipped both my mom and I (although my oldest daughter got it…lucky girl). I remember feeling so grown up when she put a little in my hair to make me happy. I don’t think it was in there long enough to do anything, but I sure thought it made me a red head.

Well, this is not that Henna!

Today’s henna comes in lots of colors that can be customized specifically for you. Free from dyes, preservatives, and chemicals, henna has the ability to strengthen hair and promote natural hair replenishment. Henna brows are a form of eyebrow tinting that is used to stain the skin beneath the brow hairs as well as the hairs themselves. The purpose of this is to cast a shadow or create an illusion of depth and fullness in the area, visually filling in any sparseness.

Henna is a natural dye made from a plant known as hina or the henna tree. Henna brow dye lasts up to 2 weeks on the skin and up to 6 weeks on brow hair.

This treatment is best for people with normal to dry skin as oily skin types don’t hold the color on the skin as long. Client’s with very thin brows (more skin than hair) might not achieve desired results.

Brow Henna cannot be done immediately following a brow lamination, but can be done after 3-4 days.

How long do henna brows last?

We want your henna brows to last, which is why it is crucial to follow proper henna brow aftercare. Strong active ingredients and physical exfoliants will fade the henna faster, so please avoid retinols, AHA’s (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, mandelic acids), Follow these additional aftercare tips to get the most life out of your henna brows:

  • Avoid getting brows wet for 48 hours following your treatment. After that avoid over-washing your brows and when you do wash use a gentle cleanser. Remember that the less you touch them, the better!

  • Avoid the sun for 24 hours

  • Opt for oil-free products, this includes makeup remover. Oil causes the henna to fade faster.

  • Avoid touching your eyebrows.

  • Avoid facials or any skin treatments involving steaming for 24 hours.

  • Avoid swimming or activities that cause you to sweat for at least 24 hours.
